How soon can work start after the estimate?

Yes. If an existing concrete slab needs removing, demolition is priced as a separate line item in the written estimate. What does the estimate visit include?

On the south shore and west bank, the subgrade visit matters: soft alluvial clay and a water table sitting 2 to 5 feet below grade can require 4 to 6 inches of compacted limestone base where a north shore sandy site might need 3 to 4 inches. Seeing the ground changes the spec, and the spec changes the price.

After the visit, a written estimate arrives within 24 hours, broken into line items: demolition if needed, subgrade prep, base material, concrete mix and PSI, reinforcement, finish and cure protection.

What Should You Have Ready Before We Arrive?

Four pieces of information help produce an accurate written estimate rather than a rough range.

Rough dimensions of the area

Length times width in feet, even an approximation, changes the estimate by hundreds of dollars. A driveway at 400 square feet and one at 600 square feet carry different material costs, different truck loads and different crew time. A tape measure reading or a Google Maps satellite rough count is enough to start.

What the surface will carry

A slab that carries passenger vehicles is specified at 4 inches of 3500 PSI concrete. A slab carrying a loaded delivery truck or commercial equipment steps up to 5 to 6 inches of 4000 PSI with rebar on tighter centres. The load determines the spec before anything else.

Whether an existing slab needs removing

Concrete removal adds $2 to $5 per square foot depending on slab thickness, rebar density and haul distance. A 500 square foot driveway with a 4-inch unreinforced slab runs at the lower end. A commercial apron with heavy rebar runs higher. Knowing this in advance keeps the estimate accurate rather than approximate.

Access for a concrete truck

A standard ready-mix truck needs a cleared path at least 10 feet wide and overhead clearance of 14 feet. If truck access is blocked by a fence, overhead wire or tight gate, a pump truck is added to the scope and to the cost. Flagging this before the visit saves a second trip.
